California Fair Housing Act of 1992

  • Effective January 1, 1993
     
  • Conforms the Fair Employment and Housing Act to federal standards
     
  • Adds “mental and physical disability” and “familial status” to protected classes.
     
  • Requires housing providers to allow disabled persons to make reasonable modification and/or accommodations to meet their needs.
     
  • Increases the time limit for filing discrimination complaints from 60 days to 1 year.
     
  • Provides for unlimited compensatory damages and larger monetary fines.
     
  • Establishes minimum accessibility standards for all newly created multi-family housing.
     
  • Bars mobilehome parks from “adults only” residency unless they comply with criteria for the senior housing exemption.
     
  • Provides for the victim to be represented by The Department of Fair Employment and Housing if the issue is taken to court.
